CCHD supports and starts many organizations to help empower people. They are spread out all around America and have helped many people. These organizations vary in ways that they help, but they all have one thing in common: they strive to help end poverty.
- The Interchurch Coalition for Action, Reconciliation and Empowerment(ICARE)- ICARE is located in Jacksonville, Florida and their organization revolves around helping local elementary schools improve their reading skills. It is made up of 35 diverse congregations that work together with the low-income residents to help improve, their education, provide public transportation, and to lower crime and drug use. The parents of the children can also get involved in the organization's Parent Organizing Project. To find out more about ICARE, you can visit their website.
- Blocks Together(BT)-Blocks together was started in 1993. BT's goals are to try and rid communities of drugs, prostitution, and the violence that follows them. Many children are raised in "tough neighborhoods" and are surrounded by these things everyday. The people that work with BT meet with the police and local aldermen to help reach these goals. At the meetings, people can anonymously tell the police about trouble spots without having to worry about the consequences from the gangs and their leaders. Some schools even set up a Blocks Together Youth Council so that young students can get involved to help as well and learn about leadership. - Hayley House-Hayley House started out as a popular soup kitchen in Boston, Massachusetts. It was so popular that people in the area started asking to learn how to cook and bake like they do. Since then, Hayley House has evolved into an organization that teaches people in need how to cook and bake and allows them the opportunity to get a job in that career. More than 70 trainees have completed the courses and found work somewhere in the Boston area. There is now a store front bakery that people can buy the baked goods that the trainees make.
