NDA is currently collecting gifts for men, women, and children for the annual Christmas in Appalachia Mission Trip. NDA is accepting small, new, unwrapped items such as: clothes, gloves, hats, blankets, toys, children’s books, school supplies, and boots! You are welcome to drop gifts at Notre Dame Academy at the main office by Wednesday, December 11, 2019. For over thirty years, NDA students and faculty have traveled to Harlan, Kentucky in December to celebrate Christmas with the residents of this small Appalachian community. The highlight of this trip is to provide a Christmas meal, entertainment (including a special visit from a jolly old man in a red suit) and of course giving gifts! Thousands of gifts are collected and wrapped by students, parents, and faculty and staff members of NDA.
Harlan County, wedged in a valley between two tree-lined ridge mountains in the Appalachian region of Kentucky, is a beautiful place. However, it is also one of the poorest communities in the United States as poverty and unemployment rates more than double the national average. The party put on by NDA now has over 500 guests. It includes a talent show and sing-song performed by students as well as a special visit from Santa. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of families, community members and local
businesses donate gifts, food, services and equipment, each child and adult receives two gifts.
