Three NDA Students Complete Rural Healthcare Student Experience in Kentucky

Published: July 6, 2025

Last month, NDA rising seniors Camdyn Escobar ’26, Rebekah Hazard ’26, and Anaiya Paredes ’26 took part in the Sisters of Notre Dame Rural Healthcare Student Experience, hosted by St. Claire Regional Medical Center – the largest rural hospital in Eastern Kentucky.

Camdyn, Rebekah, and Anaiya joined other students from SND-sponsored schools across the United States for this one-of-a-kind experience.

During their trip, they shadowed medical professionals, accompanied providers on hospice and home healthcare visits, and completed three hospital shadowing rotations in departments including surgery, labor and delivery, and pediatrics. The students even had the opportunity to practice hands-on skills in a clinical lab, where they learned practical skills in suturing and completed a pig dissection lab.

Anaiya was very grateful to participate in this experience. “I always thought I’d like to studyb nursing, but I found on this trip that hospice and home health visits are very interesting to me,” she shares. “I could see the genuine connections that formed from spending more one-on-one time with the patients. This is something I plan to explore more in the future.”

Beyond healthcare, the students also volunteered with local service organizations, giving back by completing a community service project. They bonded with one another over shared meals, games, Mass, and ended their experience with a birthday celebration at the SND Foundation House, complete with pizza and an inflatable obstacle course.
