If you like to act, speak, write, or debate then the NDA Speech and Debate Team wants to meet you!
The team, aka “Speechies”, compete with schools from across the country in thirteen different acting, speaking, and debating categories. NDA has qualified more students to state than anyone in our district many years in a row, is part of the “200 Club”, are ranked in the top 5% of speech teams in the nation, and compete annually at district, regional, state, and national competitions. Our students have garnered district championships as well as state and national finalists and champions! Please contact Mrs. Sanders at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Costs: Membership is $110.00. If your family budget is tight, please feel free to email Mrs. Sanders. Fees due by December 1st. All checks should be made out to Notre Dame Academy. There will also be transportation and hotel costs for our out of town meets—these tournaments are not mandatory. When we go on out of town trips(states), there will be a fee to help with bus and lodging when necessary.
Clothing: You should dress in professional business attire for speech—we recommend a suit or a blazer and pants or skirt. Shoes should be worthy of business attire, but also good to move in. You may wear the same one for every meet all four years if you wish—people have done this before! Think of it as a lucky suit! It is important that dress is modest (Business professional look) You do not wear something that is too frilly or may distract judges from you!
Time Commitment: About every four to six weeks, we will have a whole group meeting at lunch. We would ask that you make every effort to attend. You do not have to go to practice every day or even every week, but you must commit to work on your piece as time permits. Debaters meet consistently every week. Mrs. Sanders, Ms. Napoli, and Ms. Hunter will have coaching times set up each week. Through most of the year, the times will be individual. There will be a sign up sheet posted outside the Green Room throughout the season. Sign up early–and REMEMBER TO COME when you sign up. We do expect you to practice on your own as well.
Meets: Meets last most of the day on Saturdays. They start at around 8:00 a.m. and usually end around 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The greater the travel distance or the bigger the meet, the longer they will last. Lunch is provided at the schools for a reasonable fee. Bring homework and/or cards for down times. We ask that you shoot for at least four meets during the season and that (if you qualify) you attend State and National Qualifiers. The more meets you attend, it will help you earn National Speech & Debate points and points toward your varsity letter. Members wear an honor cord at graduation and varsity speech team members get a an NDA letter. The more meets you go to, the better chance you have to get to state and national qualifying meets!
Mascot: Our mascot is the duck because the performer should be like the duck—calm and cool on the surface while paddling like crazy underneath!
Varsity Letter: How do you earn points? At every meet, you are given points for each round that you participate in. You can earn anywhere from one to six points each round depending on your category and your place in the round. So that at each meet you have the opportunity to earn from three to twenty four points. You receive NFL membership when you reach twenty-five points and a varsity letter when you reach 150 points.
