“Life is not linear,” reflects Jackie (Zigray) Flom ’85.
40 years after graduating from NDA, Jackie is back as NDA’s new Career Counselor, proving personalized guidance and support to students as they explore academic planning, career interests, and their options for life after high school.
“I’m looking forward to working with all grades, 7 through 12, to help the students learn that bold careers start here,” shares Jackie. “We all can be fearless and prepared, and create our own opportunities.”
In addition to her role at NDA, Jackie has been a Senior Lecturer at the University of Toledo since 2001, and received the designation “Distinguished University Lecturer” in 2021. This semester, she is teaching classes including Introduction to Business, Executive Essentials (soft business skills such as verbal and written correspondence, networking, and public speaking), Managerial and Behavioral Processes (management functions, leadership, employee motivation), and Senior Business Policy.
“In all of these classes, I use real world examples as well as computer simulation exercises to demonstrate to students how the theories discussed in class are actually applied in life,” explains Jackie.
Jackie also serves as a member of the St. Francis de Sales Board of Trustees, and she previously worked as Advancement Director at Lial Catholic School for nearly 18 years. So, it’s quite clear that Catholic education is important to her.
“You can have all of the knowledge in the world, but if you don’t have values and faith, you’re pretty empty,” she reflects.
“In my own life, I know to trust in God’s goodness and provident care, just as the Sisters of Notre Dame remind us in their Charism. So, if one door closes – that’s okay. It’s just an opportunity for us to look for another door, or a window.
“I trust that God will always show me a window, and that’s how I was led back to NDA!”
