Being a female on a construction site may seem a little unusual, but not if you’re Megan (Krzysiak) Zaccardelli ’01, who has worked in the commercial construction industry for 20+ years.
“When I was at NDA, the classes I enjoyed most were pre-calculus and physics,” shares Megan. “So, I trusted my gut and looked into a college major and a career where I could use those subjects I was good at.”
Megan attended the Ohio State University where she earned her bachelor of science degree in civil engineering, with a focus in construction. For the first half of her career, she worked in Tampa as a project manager, and then moved to Charlotte, where her career has been focused on preconstruction.
“Preconstruction involves what happens before you start building – it’s a little more of the pricing and strategy side of projects,” she explains.
Although she’s worked in the field for 20 years, Megan has experienced some challenges as a female in a male-dominated field, especially early in her career.
“There were definitely some tricky situations, and conversations,” she recalls. “I found it very important and helpful to have a good mentor, who can vouch for you and stand up for you.”
Megan is part of an organization – CREW Network – that provides this kind of support. CREW Network brings together female professionals in the construction industry, including architects, designers, managers and builders. “Through the CREW Network, I’ve been able to get to know the other women in the construction industry in Charlotte. There are so few of us, it helps to be able to rely on one another.”
Overall, Megan loves the construction field. “It’s such a cool industry – and nothing beats the feeling of pride in creating something,” she shares. “I love to drive around with my kids and point out the projects I have been a part of building. It’s very visible and tangible.”
What advice would Megan give to an NDA girl today? “Enjoy whatever you’re being called to do, and don’t be afraid!”
