Tradition Never Graduates - Chahdael (Smith) Foreman '10

Published: August 3, 2026

As a mom of three and a survivor of both postpartum depression and cancer, as well as a person living with chronic illness, Chahdael (Smith) Foreman '10 truly understands how overwhelming it can be to navigate care for yourself while caring for others.

To support others who are experiencing similar challenges in their lives, Chahdael started a mental health therapy private practice focusing on pregnant and parenting individuals - Ad Meliora Psychotherapy, which means "toward better things" in Latin.

"My work is grounded in the belief that healing begins when we feel deeply seen and gently supported," explains Chahdael.

"I know firsthand that parenthood can stir up a mix of love, fear, joy, and loss, sometimes all at once. My goal is to help my clients make sense of those emotions, rediscover their own strength, and feel more grounded, connected, and whole."

In June of this year, Chahdael and her family moved back to the Toledo area from Columbus. She plans to continue her practice in northwest Ohio, working within the community to improve maternal mental health outcomes.

"I'm so excited to be back in Toledo after 12 years," she shares. In addition, her husband, Tarik, will be working at NDA, in the Business Office.

Chahdael's clients describe her style as warm, authentic, and grounding. "I strive to help each person feel seen, understood, and empowered to create meaningful change. I help create a space where you can slow down, breathe, and reconnect with who you are: not just as a parent or caregiver, but as a whole person," she says.

As a parent herself, Chahdael understands that having children requires you to separate parts of who you are to figure out the best way forward. "It's so gratifying to work with a parent who is struggling, to help them find the missing piece and have that lightbulb moment - where they begin to think of things in a new way," she shares.

"When I can help them turn introspection into insight - that's the best part of what I do."
